The CoSMo Company
Description of organisation
The CoSMo Company has developed a unique software tool and an in-silico modeling process dedicated to complex systems. Although initially developed for applications in biology and healthcare, the technology was also tested and validated in other fields where complex systems are of the essence such as urban planning, energy and industrial processes.
In life sciences, The CoSMo Software Platform uses a systems biology approach designed to represent the biological systems and their behavior in their complexity. The multi-scale and trans-scale modeling approach seeks to understand how the individual components of a biological system interact at different times and scales – from molecules, cells, tissues and organs to organisms in their dynamic environment.
The CoSMo Company provides a specific language for complex systems modeling that allows the description and integration of different systems models within the same conceptual framework. The models developed are specific to the real system at stake and allow running virtual experiments to facilitate and accelerate the innovation cycle, the development of new products and the implementation of new strategies. The CoSMo software is clearly in the space of systems biology, linking heterogeneous entities and events at different spatial and time scale. The CoSMo approach consists in starting simply in order to build up the complexity iteratively. The CoSMo Company objective is to capture in the model the minimum information necessary to explain the observed phenomena.
Previous experience
The scientific and technical leader at The CoSMo Company coordinated and participated in several European (FP6 and FP7: Morphex, Dynanets) in various biological scientific domains like embryogenesis, morphogenesis, as well as epidemiology. CoSMo is also a work package leader in BioPreDyn (FP7) a program in bio IT started in November 2011.
CoSMo focus since its creation in June 2010 has been the development of the software language csmML, dedicated to complex systems modeling. In urban planning CoSMo solution has been adopted by leading environmental services companies such as Veolia and EDF. In life Sciences, CoSMo is currently actively involved in research collaboration agreements in the field of immunology, oncology and bioproduction with internationally renowned academic centers such as the Singapour Immunology Network (SIgN), the INSERM and top pharmaceutical companies.
Profile of technical staff members
Eric Boix, is co-founder, President and CSO at The CoSMo Company. Eric is an internationally renowned expert in the field of complex systems, he previously worked at the computer science laboratory at Ecole Normale Supérieure in Lyon where he took part in the development of middleware grid computing software (DIET) but most of his time was devoted to the complex system simulation group within IXXI (Complex System Institute). He led the development of the modeling and simulation platform within several European projects. Eric received his PhD in mathematics in 1994 at Ecole Polytechnique, Paris
Thierry de Lumley is the Development Director for Biology at The CoSMo Company. He has previous business development experience to support US based companies on the French market and industrial R&D experience as a project manager at Corning (NYSE: GLW). Prior to joining the industry Thierry had worked in academia as a research scientist at the Center for Protein Engineering and at the Chemistry Department of the University of Cambridge, UK. Thierry received a BSc degree from Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Lillev and a PhD from the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas in Austin
The CoSMo Company staff currently consists in 20+ international modelers and developers with MSc or PhD degrees in engineering.
