Description of organization
The University of Klagenfurt is a rather young Austrian University offering programs in Economics, business Administration, cultural sciences, humanities and last but not least informatics. The university is significantly expanding into technical areas and recently founded a faculty for technical sciences. Currently there are 10 research groups in informatics/computer science with a clear orientation towards application oriented research. The group of Information Systems Engineering (Prof. Eder) has an excellent track record in research in two main areas: workflow systems and data warehousing / integration of heterogeneous databases/ application interoperability. Within the 6th framework program of the European Union the group was partner in the Network of excellence INTEROP, and in the STREP-FET project "WS-Diamond". In the 7th framework programme the group is involved in the ESFRI project BBMRI. The group also secured grants in the Austrian Genome Research program GEN-AU (GATIB-I and GATIB-II) for establishing an IT-Architecture for biobanks and facilitate research based on biobanks.
Profile of staff members
Prof. Dr. Johann Eder is full professor for Information and Communication Systems at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria. Since 2005 is he is vice president of the Austrian Science Funds (FWF), heading the department of natural sciences and technology. The research interests of Prof. Eder are databases and information systems, in particular workflow systems and data warehousing techniques. He successfully directed many externally funded research projects in different areas, e.g. in temporal data warehousing and data management in biobanks. He authored more than 150 peer-reviewed papers in international journals, conference proceedings, and edited books. Dr. Christian Koncilia is researcher at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria. Before that he worked as managing consultant for a business intelligence vendor in Munich, Germany and was involved in many projects integrating and harmonising medical data sources for data warehouses. His research interests are data warehousing, ontologies and evolution of information systems. He received his PhD in the area of temporal data warehousing and business intelligence. He authored several papers in peer reviews international conference proceedings.
