Description of organisation
Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (Royal Institute of Technology), KTH, was founded in 1827 and is the largest technical university in Scandinavia. The university is responsible for one-third of Sweden's capacity for engineering studies and technical research at post-secondary level. Prof. Mathias Uhlén is the head of the Proteomics Department at KTH and director of the Human Proteome Atlas center (HPA) and director of the Science for Life Laboratory. The HPA center is a resource facility for systematic high-throughput generation of affinity reagents and development of antibody based proteomics methods such as fluorescent-based analysis, protein and tissue array technology for functional annotation of proteins. The center is responsible for the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) portal which is a publicly available database with more than 9 million high-resolution images (March 2010) showing distribution of proteins in
48 different normal tissues, 20 different cancer types and 47 different human cell lines as well as cellular localization of proteins in 3 cell lines.
Previous experience
Prof. Mathias Uhlén is member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Science (IVA), the Royal Swedish Academy of Science (KVA), the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) council and the chairman the HUPO Antibody Initiative (HAI), which is an international effort involving Europe, US and Asia/Pacific to create validated antibody resources. Uhlén is currently part of one 7 EU-FP7 initiatives: (i) the ENGAGE program for analysis of biobanks using various methods, (ii) the PROSPECTS consortium for the analysis of human protein using proteomics methods (iii) the PepChipOmics program to use peptide arrays for mapping of antibodies and other protein interaction, (iv) the BIO-NMD program for identification of biomarkers for diagnostics and therapeutics of Neuromuscular Disorders (v) the EURATRANS program for rat functional genomics, (vi) the AFFINOMICS program for generation of validated binders targeting human proteins and their application (vii) the CAGEKID for discovery of genetic kidney cancer biomarkers.
Profile of staff members
Prof Mathias Uhlen is the Program Director for the Human Proteome Resource program. His research interests include high-throughput proteomics and the use of antibody-based methods in systems biology. He is the main responsible person at this partner. Dr. Cristina Al-Khalili Szigyarto is responsible for external relations of the HPA project and coordinates antibody generation and distribution. She will be involved in consortium research projects.
